The rules
Introduction
The Riftoria Tournament is a competitive League of Legends event hosted by Riftoria, built to promote high-level amateur and semi-pro play in a fair, structured environment. By participating, all players and teams agree to comply with these rules and all admin decisions.
Not affiliated with, endorsed, or sponsored by Riot Games, Inc. or League of Legends Esports.
Format
- Swiss stage — teams play rounds against opponents with matching records until they qualify for or are eliminated from playoffs.
- Playoffs — single-elimination bracket among the surviving teams.
Exact win/loss thresholds and the number of playoff qualifiers are announced before the tournament, once the field size is known.
Rosters & eligibility
- Play on your main account — the one that reflects your real champion pool and rank.
- Captains submit each member's summoner name, Riot ID and region at sign-up.
- Five players, plus up to two subs — the roster cap this site already enforces, so a team that fits on its team page fits in the cup.
- No roster changes once the tournament begins.
- No registered sub available? You may request a free agent of comparable rank, subject to admin approval.
Registering through this site submits the Riot ID and region already held on each member's account, so there is nothing to type in and nothing to mistype. It also means an account with no Riot ID linked cannot be registered at all — link one before the deadline.
Link your Riot accountRegistration & account vetting
- Register at least 24 hours before your first tournament day so admins can vet accounts for smurfs and alts. Late registrations aren't eligible.
- Every member must have a Riot account linked here so admins can pull their stats page — no linked account, no play.
- You may only play on the accounts listed on your registration.
Registration closing on the 17th is what leaves that 24 hours: the first games are on the evening of the 18th, and every roster is vetted in between.
Swiss stage
- Everyone starts 0–0.
- Round one is seeded by admins, or randomised.
- Each round after that pairs teams with identical records; rematches are avoided where possible.
- Advance at 3 wins, eliminated at 3 losses.
- Non-decisive matches are BO1. A match that would qualify or eliminate a team is BO3.
- Playoff seeding: Swiss record, then game differential, then strength of schedule.
Playoffs
- Single-elimination bracket by seed — first seed against the lowest, and so on.
- Semi-finals are a fearless BO3.
- Grand final is a fearless BO5.
- Optional third-place match between the losing semi-finalists.
Fearless draft means champions used earlier in a series cannot be picked again by either team for the rest of that series.
Drafting & match setup
- All picks and bans happen on the Riftoria website draft tool before the game. Game codes, the draft link and the opponent's stats page are provided by the site — you do not make your own lobbies, codes or drafts.
- The game is created in blind pick. After the website draft, each player locks in the exact champion they were assigned. There is no in-client pick and ban.
- You must pick the champion you locked on the site. Picking anything else is a violation and may forfeit the game.
- Disconnected, or hit a browser problem during the website draft? Capture evidence — a screenshot or a recording.
- Fail to lock in time and your team has ten seconds to submit the intended pick to admins in the designated channel, or it becomes a random pick and the draft proceeds — unless admins rule that a reset is warranted.
Emergency substitutes
Need a sub who isn't on your registration? You have until fifteen minutes after the series starts to find a valid one.
- Each game an emergency sub plays, your team loses bans 1 and 4.
In-game conduct
- Once the game starts, only the five players in that game may be in voice. Staff and coaches can stay until the draft ends but must leave before the game begins. A non-player in voice after the game starts is a forfeit.
- Each team gets ten minutes of total pause time per game.
- Pauses must be announced in all-chat with a valid reason. Send “r” in all-chat when you are ready, and the other team unpauses.
- Non-players may not join voice during a pause. That is also a forfeit.
Remakes
- A remake restarts a game over critical issues affecting competitive integrity.
- The game of record starts at a significant event — a successful invade, or first blood.
- Remakes are granted solely at admin discretion. Minor bugs don't qualify.
- A game-breaking issue before the game of record may mean a full remake; after it, the situation is assessed case by case.
- Notify admins immediately and submit evidence within fifteen minutes.
- Admins may award a win to a team holding an unassailable lead.
- All remake decisions are final.
Reporting results
- Submit results within fifteen minutes of the series ending, with end-of-game lobby screenshots.
- Disputes must be filed within thirty minutes of the match ending.
Code of conduct
- Uphold fair play, honesty and respect at all times.
- No cheating, ghosting or account sharing.
- Teams are responsible for all their players' actions; misconduct can bring team penalties.
- Penalties run from warnings to series forfeits, disqualification, or bans from future events.
- All disputes need evidence. Admin decisions are final.
- Riftoria staff may amend rules, issue rulings and enforce penalties at their discretion to keep things fair.
Media & promotion rights
By participating, you grant Riftoria the right to broadcast, record, stream, clip and share any tournament games on any platform, including social media, and to use participants' in-game names, Riot IDs and footage to promote Riftoria and its events. No compensation is owed for this use.
Prizes
- First — 100€ to the team.
- Second — 5,000 coins each.
- Third — 3,000 coins each.
Third place is paid on the third-place match, which is what makes it worth playing.
If you have no team
Sign up for the mixer. On the evening of the 14th we put everybody without a team into voice, read out who plays what, and build rosters out of the room — and anybody who leaves the mixer on a team has three days to register before the window shuts.
- Say which lanes you actually play, not the ones you would like to. The whole thing is a sorting exercise and it only works on honest inputs.
- Tick the captain box if you would take the job. A mixer with no volunteers to lead is ten people standing in a circle, and captains are what the night is short of every single time.
- Teams use the same form. If you are four and need a fifth, put yourself in as a team with one seat open and we will point people at you on the night.
- You do not have to be there live to be placed, but the people who turn up get sorted first — a name on a list is harder to build a team around than somebody in the channel.
